Inebria Me adapts the innovative and visionary 2019 album La Luz de la Esperanza by Los Angeles–based composer, musician, and performance artist San Cha into an experimental opera.

Inebria Me is a bold, visually striking contemporary opera that blends high drama, mysticism, and social commentary. Drawing from the divine ecstasy of religious iconography—particularly The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa—and the heightened melodrama of early ’90s Mexican telenovelas such as Marimar and María Mercedes, the opera explores themes of desire, transcendence, and liberation.

At the heart of Inebria Me is Dolores, a field worker swept into a world of wealth through marriage, only to find herself trapped in a life of neglect, control, and spiritual emptiness. As she endures disillusionment and abuse, she teeters between submission and defiance, longing for an escape that feels impossible.

That escape arrives in the form of Esperanza, an ethereal force embodied in a celestial apparatus—a mysterious vision that both haunts and awakens Dolores. Through their passionate encounter, Dolores experiences a transcendental moment of rapture: a confrontation with divine pleasure and self-actualization. This ecstatic revelation propels her to break free from earthly torment and embrace a radical new existence, where devotion and autonomy are no longer at odds.

Inebria Me is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation and Development Fund project, co-commissioned by Performance Space New York (PSNY, NYC); Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA, Portland, OR); Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana (MACLA, San Jose, CA); and Roy & Edna Disney CalArts Theatre (REDCAT, Los Angeles, CA).
